Welcome to Yorkmont Yorkshire Terriers !
WHAT IS A BREEDER?

By Peggy Adamson

  • A Breeder (with a capital B)is one who thirsts for knowledge and never really knows it all, one who wrestles with decisions of conscience, convenience, and commitment.

  • A Breeder is one who sacrifices personal interests, finances, time, friendships, fancy furniture, and deep pile carpeting! She gives up the dreams of a long, luxurious cruise in favor of turning that all-important Show into this year's vacation.

  • A Breeder goes without sleep (but never without coffee!) in hours spent planning a breeding or watching anxiously over the birth process, and afterwards, over every little sneeze, wiggle or cry.

  • A Breeder skips dinner parties because that litter is due or the babies have to be fed at eight. She disregards birth fluids and puts mouth to mouth to save a gasping newborn, literally blowing life into a tiny, helpless creature that may be the culmination of a lifetime of dreams.

  • A Breeder's lap is a marvelous place where generations of proud and noble champions once snoozed.

  • A Breeder's hands are strong and firm and often soiled, but ever so gentle and sensitive to the thrusts of a puppy's wet nose.

  • A Breeder's back and knees are usually arthritic from stooping, bending, and sitting in the birthing box, but are strong enough to enable the breeder to show the next choice pup to a Championship.

  • A Breeder's shoulders are stooped and often heaped with abuse from competitors, but they're wide enough to support the weight of a thousand defeats and frustrations.

  • A Breeder's arms are always able to wield a mop, support an armful of puppies, or lend a helping hand to a newcomer.

  • A Breeder's ears are wondrous things, sometimes red (from being talked about) or strangely shaped (from being pressed against a phone receiver), often deaf to criticism, yet always fine-tuned to the whimper of a sick puppy.

  • A Breeder's eyes are blurred from pedigree research and sometimes blind to her own dog's faults, but they are ever so keen to the competitions faults and are always searching for the perfect specimen.

  • A Breeder's brain is foggy on faces, but it can recall pedigrees faster than an IBM computer. It's so full of knowledge that sometimes it blows a fuse: it catalogues thousands of good boning, fine ears, and perfect heads... and buries in the soul the failures and the ones that didn't turn out.

  • A Breeder's heart is often broken, but it beats strongly with hope everlasting... and it's always in the right place! Oh, yes, there are breeders, and then, there are BREEDERS

BEWARE OF BREEDERS:

  • WHO ADVERTISE THEIR PUPPIES BEFORE THEY ARE BORN AND TAKE NON REFUNDABLE DEPOSITS ON UNBORN PUPPIES OR PUPPIES THAT ARE LESS THEN 12 WEEKS OLD. WHAT HAPPENS IF THE PUPPY DIES, ARE YOU GOING TO GET THE NEXT AVAILABLE PUPPY, WHICH MIGHT BE MONTHS AWAY OR DO YOU HAVE TO WAIT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE "WAITING LIST". THIS TYPE OF ADVERTISING IS TO "PURCHASE" THE UNBORN PUPPY OUT OF THE UPCOMING LITTER, IT IS NOT A LAYAWAY PLAN TOWARDS A FUTURE PUPPY, BECAUSE IT MAY TAKE YOU 6 MONTHS TO A YEAR OR MORE TO PURCHASE A PUPPY.

  • WHO ADVERTISE THEIR PUPPIES BY THE PARENTS SIZES,WEIGHTS, etc. IT IS THE GENETICS BEHIND THE PARENTS, THE PARENTS LITTERMATES, THEIR GRANDPARENTS, ETC. FOR ATLEAST 6 GENERATIONS BACK, "NOT THE SIZE OF THE PARENTS" THAT WILL DETERMINE THE SIZE OF THE PUPPY. SIZE OF THE PUPPY CAN NOT BE DETERMINED UNTIL THE PUPPY IS ATLEAST 5 MONTHS OR OLDER!!! DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE "OLD WIVES TALE" THAT YOU DOUBLE THE WEIGHT AT 3 MONTHS OF AGE!! IT IS "GENETICS" NOT JUST THE SIZE OF THE PARENTS THAT DETERMINE THE SIZE OF YOUR PUPPY AT ADULTHOOD!!

  • WHO ADVERTISE CHAMPION BLOODLINES. JUST BECAUSE THE PUPPIES PARENTS HAVE CHAMPION BLOODLINES OR CHAMPION SIRED DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN HEALTHY OR QUALITY. THE BREEDER MUST KNOW ABOUT THOSE CHAMPIONS AND THEIR BLOODLINES AND WHAT HEALTH ISSUES ARE IN THEIR LINES!! THERE IS NO "PERFECT" BLOODLINE. IF THE BREEDER SAYS "THE PUPPIES ARE OF CHAMPION BLOODLINES AND THAT MEANS THEY ARE OF QUALITY", THEN THAT BREEDER IS SELLING THOSE PUPS ON THE "NUMBER" OF CHAMPIONS IN THE PEDIGREE OR JUST BECAUSE THERE ARE CHAMPIONS IN THE LINEAGE!!

  • WHO SELLS THEIR PUPPIES AND PLACES THEM BEFORE THEY ARE A MINIMUM OF 16 WEEKS OLD. MANY TIMES HEALTH ISSUES DO NOT ARISE UNTIL THEY ARE 16 WEEKS OF AGE, SUCH AS LIVER SHUNT, LUXATING PATELLAS, LEG PERTHES, ETC.

  • WHO SPEAK SWEETLY TO YOU AND TELL YOU EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO HEAR!!! ASK THEM HOW MANY YEARS HAVE THEY BEEN BREEDING "YORKSHIRE TERRIERS" AND DO THEY HAVE THEIR DOGS SHOWN. ARE THEY BREEDING JUST TO SELL PRETTY PETS OR ARE THEY ALSO BREEDING FOR BETTER QUALITY, HEALTH, DISPOSITION, FOR SHOW, ETC.

  • WHO DO NOT HAVE A COMPLETE WRITTEN HEALTH EXAM/CERTIFICATE DONE ON YOUR PUPPY WITHIN 10 DAYS OF YOU TAKING YOUR PUPPY HOME AND GIVING YOU A COPY OF IT. ALSO YOUR PUPPY SHOULD HAVE ATLEAST THREE SETS OF VACCINATIONS, FOUR SETS OF VACCINATIONS WOULD BE EXCELLENT BEFORE THE PUPPY LEAVES THE BREEDER. LESS THEN FOUR SETS OF VACCINATIONS DOES NOT GIVE YOUR PUPPY FULL IMMUNITY.

  • WHO DOES NOT GIVE YOU INFORMATION ON HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PUPPY AND A LIST OF ITEMS YOU NEED TO HAVE "BEFORE" TAKING YOUR PUPPY HOME.

  • WHO STATE THAT ONLY "CERTAIN" KENNEL REGISTERIES/CLUBS MEAN QUALITY. IT IS THE "BREEDER", NOT THE KENNEL REGISTERIES/CLUBS WHO MAKE OR BREAK THE QUALITY!! KENNEL REGISTERIES/CLUBS ARE ONLY FOR REGISTERING THE PUPPY, THEY ARE NOT MONITORING THE QUALITY OF BREEDING, THAT IS UP TO THE BREEDER.

    The Dog Ten Commandments

    1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful.

    2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

    3. Place your trust in me; it is crucial for my well-being.

    4. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment. I have only you.

    5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice when it's speaking to me.

    6. Be aware that however you treat me, I'll never forget it.

    7. Before you hit me, remember that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you.

    8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I've been out in the sun too long, or my heart may be getting old and weak.

    9. Take care of me when I get old. You, too, will grow old.

    10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say, "I can't bear to watch it," or "Let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember, I love you.

    Testimonial-1

I bought a Yorkie from you about 3 years ago. I named her Abby. I had just lost my Yorkie of 8 years when I called you about getting another Yorkie. I told you that I wanted a small compact yorkie that was very affectionate and loving.

Well, I just wanted you to know that my Abby is the joy of my life. She is so precious and has the sweetest disposition. She sleeps on my pillow right beside my head every single night. Her little snores are just adorable.

I just wanted to say thank you 3 years later for making me the proudest mommy I know. Abby is so tiny and is about 4 lbs. Every day I thank God for letting me be Abby's mother, and I wanted you also to know how grateful I am. You really listened when I told you what kind of baby I was looking for. You made a perfect match bringing Abby and I together!

    Judy I.

    Testimonial-2

Every day that passes, I am happier that we chose him (actually, I think it was the other way around) He is so sweet and doesn't mind strangers petting him. He is good with little kids - and they always want to see him, cuz he's just so darned cute. I can't believe it's only been seven weeks - he's learned so much and discovered so many new things.

Next week is graduation from puppy school. He has done so well. He may be the smartest yorkie I've ever had. I think I told you my first one earned a C.D. title. Honestly, Beau is picking things up quicker than that dog did. He knows sit, stay, down, come, shake "hands", crawl, and he will even heel off leash with me in the house. You just can't imagine how cute he is doing his stuff. He is just the best little dog ever.

We also play "tennis". Our house is down the hill from some tennis courts and about two weeks ago, Beau found one of the balls in the driveway and carried it back to the front door. A tennis ball is almost as big as his head, so I was amazed that he could even pick the ball up. Then he began to strut down the sidewalk with it and didn't drop it until we got back to the door. I've taught him to fetch it when I throw it and bring it back to me. It's something new every day that makes me laugh at him. It remains a daily pleasure to watch him discover the world.

He is loved more with each passing day and we are so grateful to have him in our lives. THANKS AGAIN

    Elaine Curtis and Beau
